La SFTCG a été créée en 2001 pour promouvoir le développement de la Thérapie Cellulaire et Génique en France et constituer une interface active entre les différentes personnes impliquées dans le domaine des biothérapies, à toutes les étapes allant de la recherche fondamentale et translationnelle à l’application clinique thérapeutique.

Les dernières années ont été marquées par des progrès considérables et la démonstration que des patients atteints de maladies sévères peuvent être effectivement et efficacement traités par Thérapie Cellulaire ou par Thérapie Génique. L’émergence de ce nouveau champ de la médecine a souligné l’importance de l’interaction entre les différents partenaires de ces progrès technologiques et médicaux. Le développement d’outils technologiques, cellules-médicaments, vecteurs de transfert de gènes, les moyens d’évaluation de leur efficacité et de leur tolérance, le contexte réglementaire et les problèmes soulevés par les risques potentiellement induits et par le coût et le financement de cette médecine nouvelle, le rôle déterminant joué par les associations de patients ont créé un large réseau d’interactions et d’échanges que notre SFTCG a pour mission de promouvoir, d’aider et de fédérer.

Je souhaite que la SFTCG développe son rôle actif fédérateur dans le domaine des Biothérapies, que ce soit au niveau de la recherche fondamentale que des étapes cliniques. Les progrès récents, reprogrammation et cellules souches, intégration ciblée des gènes thérapeutiques, utilisation des miRNA, témoignent de l’évolution extrêmement rapide de ce domaine et justifient l’enthousiasme qui nous anime.

Nous avons besoin de votre soutien et de votre participation active. Je voudrais inviter tous les hommes et les femmes impliqués dans ce nouveau champ passionnant des Biothérapies et de la Médecine Régénérative, chercheurs, médecins, représentants de l’industrie, des agences réglementaires et des organisations gouvernementales, associations de patients, à nous rejoindre en devenant membres de notre société et en participant à notre congrès annuel. Aidez nous à remplir notre mission, contribuer au progrès des nouvelles approches de thérapies cellulaires et géniques, espoir thérapeutique pour les patients atteints de maladies sévères génétiques ou acquises.

President's Letter

The French Society for Cell and Gene Therapy was created in 2001 to promote the development of Cell and Gene Therapy in France and to become the active interface between the people involved in the field of biotherapies at every level of translational research from preclinical laboratory work to clinical applications.

The past few years have witnessed considerable progress, with translation of numerous important new treatments demonstrating that patients with severe diseases can be treated efficiently and effectively by Cell Therapy and by Gene Therapy.

The emergence of this new field of medicine has underlined the importance of:

• Strong collaborations between many different partners
• The development of technological tools, medicinal cells and gene transfer vectors
• A responsive regulatory context
• Tools for evaluating efficiency and tolerance
• Sharing problems raised by the potential risks and working together to find solutions
• The cost of financing this new medicine, and
• The pivotal role played by patients associations, which have created a large, dynamic network that our society aims to promote, support and further unify

Our annual congress is the opportunity for all the people involved in this human network, researchers, physicians, industry and government representatives to meet. For students in particular, this is a great chance to present their work, create exchanges and form collaborations, which are very important tools in their training.

I would like the SFTCG to develop its unifying role in the field of biotherapies both for basic research and the different clinical stages. Recent progress: reprogramming of stem cells, targeted integration of therapeutic genes, use of miRNA, are a testimony to the pace at which we are moving and justify our ever growing enthusiasm.

More specifically, my wishes for the years to come are:

• Firstly to promote the education of students through the organisation of congresses, the sharing of scientific information and the facilitating of an exchange forum
• Secondly to set up a strong interaction with other societies involved in the field of biotherapies both nationally and internationally. Such interactions, including the co-organisation of meetings and the consolidation of training and exchange tools for students, are essential to the sustained advance of these fields

We need your support and active participation. I would like to urge people involved in the many facets of this new fascinating field of biotherapies and regenerative medicine to join and work with the SFTCG; Researchers, physicians and patient associations , government and industry representatives. Help us fulfill our mission by contributing to new, ethically sound approaches in Cell and Gene Therapy thus creating therapeutic hope for patients suffering from severe genetic or acquired diseases.
